Finding Peace

It is undeniable that the impact of life as a Navy SEAL carries very serious consequences, often leading to depression and PTSD.

While it may feel that we are powerless, there are ways to find peace and navigate through these challenging times.

1. Connect with Fellow Veterans

Sharing experiences with those who understand can reduce the daunting feeling of isolation.

Join support groups with SEALs who have faced similar challenges.

2. Engage in Physical Activity

Daily physical activity stabilizes your mood and helps reduce symptoms of depression.

Whether it’s a new hike, a gym class or a slow walk in the neighborhood, any activity helps manage stress and improve overall well-being.

3. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation can help in managing anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Things like breathing exercises and guided meditations can provide moments of peace and clarity.

4. Reach Out to a Professional

Connect with a therapist or counselor who specializes in trauma and PTSD for additional support and coping strategies.

5. Establish a Healthy Routine

Make it your goal to establish a healthy routine. Consistent sleep patterns, regular meals and scheduled activities can help create a more predictable environment in your life, which helps manage symptoms of PTSD and depression.

Take care of yourself, you are worthy of progress and healing. PTSD and depression do not define you.

If you or someone you love is struggling and needs support, dial 988 for the National Suicide Hotline.

According to a New York Times article, many Navy SEALs who died by suicide show a similar pattern of brain damage. SEALs dealing with depression and PTSD must seek effective healing and coping strategies.

You are not alone.
